Quadir Boykin, 46, was charged with arson in connection with a June 7 fire, according to court records. Boykin pleaded not guilty and had been held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning while awaiting trial. At 12:40 a.m. on Monday, deputies found him unresponsive in his jail cell. Staff and later paramedics performed life-saving measures, but Boykin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said there were no signs of foul play, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release. The investigation is ongoing and no other information about Boykin’s death is available.

Boykin had recently been under a doctor’s evaluation of his mental health, according to court records. A new doctor’s report was scheduled to be read at a Jan. 15 court hearing. In March, Boykin faced charges of petty theft with prior convictions, and that case was still pending as well.

A tribute to Boykin was posted Monday in a blog linked to a Facebook page titled “Be Updated.”

“Quadir was more than a name in a report or a statistic within the justice system,” the unnamed author wrote. “He was a human being with experiences, struggles, and moments that shaped who he was. Those who knew him remember a man who, like many, faced personal challenges while still seeking understanding and stability. His journey reflects the often unseen realities faced by individuals struggling with mental health concerns.”

  1. This is tragic. No matter the nature of his alleged crime, his struggle was real. The evaluation of mental illness didn’t come soon enough. Pray for his family. I hope they’ve been contacted responsibly. No more struggle young man, rest in peace.
