Heritage High’s baseball team gave up four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but held on for an 8-6 victory at Citrus Hill on Wednesday.
The Patriots (3-2) led 4-1 early in the game and appeared in good shape after scoring 4 more runs in the top of the seventh for and 8-2 lead. But in the bottom of the inning, a two-run double, sacrifice fly, and an error cut the deficit to 8-6 with two outs. The next batter grounded out to end the game.
Tommy Nava pitched all seven innings to earn the victory. Wade Johnson went 2 for 2, including a 2-run triple. Nathyn Ojeda also had 2 hits.
Liberty lost a 3-0 decision at Valley View in its season opener. The Bison finished with seven hits, with Caleb Lozano (2 for 2) being the only Liberty player with more than one hit.
At Temescal Canyon, Paloma Valley lost a 2-1 decision on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning. Temescal pushed the run across with a walk, single, bunt single to load the bases, and a walk.
Paloma Valley outhit Temescal Canyon, 10-6. Ryan Christman went 3 for 4 and Clinton Glass went 2 for 3 with the Wildcats’ only RBI in the first inning. Both teams scored in the first inning and the game was scoreless until the eighth. Paloma Valley is now 2-3.
In softball, Liberty High improved its record to 4-1 with a 14-2 win at Canyon Springs. Juliana Larson drove in four runs for the Bison, including a home run. Lissette Quinones had 3 hits while Larson and Brooklyn Rackstraw had 2 each.
Kierstynn Vogt was the winning pitcher, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits over 3.2 innings. Rackstraw pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
In boys volleyball, Liberty defeated Hemet 3-1, improving its record to 8-2.
