The Santa Rosa Academy girls basketball team lost its first game of the season to Sherman Indian Tuesday night, 43-24.
The first half was a bit rough for the Rangers; they managed to score only 6 points. Coming out for the second half, the Rangers looked aggressive early with an 8-0 run that included two 3-pointers from Neima Moore. Defensively, they were able to attack the boards to grab rebounds as well as intercepting passes, which led to easy layups.
The leading scorer for the Rangers was Moore with 17 points. Moore was able to find her way to the basket quickly, thanks to 4 of the 6 steals she had. Those led to breakaway layups and easy points for Santa Rosa.
The defense for the Rangers also came out strong in the second half. They recorded 4 steals in the third quarter, letting them limit the damage and mount the road to a comeback. Unfortunately, Sherman Indian eventually regained control of the game.
Power forward Madison Flores was the top defensive player for the Rangers. Flores had 9 defensive rebounds and a block.
“I was just trying to get the ball back in our possession,” she said. “We had some rough turnovers, so I was trying to limit those mistakes and not let them capitalize on rough mistakes.”
In the fourth quarter, the Rangers committed 5 turnovers, which killed their momentum pretty quickly and ensured Sherman Indian came away with the victory.
Blakely Chatman came out during the second quarter with an injury following a diving play for the ball. During the third quarter, Chatman was able to return to the game. She recorded 4 steals and had 2 assists following her return.
The Rangers will be back in action Wednesday night when they take on Tahquitz High School at home.
