One of baseball’s great wordsmiths, Yogi Berra, once said, “It’s not over, till it’s over.” Unfortunately for the Lake Elsinore Storm, leading 2-1 with two outs in the 9th inning on Sunday afternoon in Stockton in a game against the Ports, it was not over.
With Storm closer Ethan Long on the mound, and the aforementioned two outs in the books, the Storm gave up 2 runs as 5 batters came to the plate. There was a walk, a single, an intentional walk, an error, and another single. In the end, the Ports won the ballgame, 3-2.
Other than a home run given up by reliever Javier Chacon and the issue in the 9th inning, Storm pitching was excellent. All told, the starter Carlos Medina and 4 relievers gave up just 6 hits, walked 4, and struck out 9.
On the offensive side, the Storm offense managed just 5 hits for the second game in a row. More problematic, the Storm were 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position, and 1 for 12 over the last 2 games.
Lake Elsinore is now 6-9 on the season, 2 games behind the Cal South division leaders, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
The Storm will be back home at Diamond Stadium on Tuesday 21 at 6:05 p.m. to play the Visalia Rawhide. For tickets, visit tickets@stormbaseball.com or visit the Diamond Stadium Box Office prior to the game. The Box Office opens 3 hours before the game.
