Concrete pour marks milestone in Bradley Bridge work; completion due in fall

Last week marked a milestone in the construction of the Bradley Road Bridge, which a city official said remains on track to open this fall.

Crews placed 845 cubic yards of concrete for the stem and soffit sections, the vertical walls, and the underside of the bridge deck structure, said City Communications Director Phil Southard.

“Completing this phase represents a critical step in the overall construction sequence and reflects strong progress toward reopening this fall,” Southard said.

Crews are now installing utilities before shifting to construction of the deck falsework – the temporary support framework that forms the bridge deck during concrete placement. That concrete placement will form the roadway surface and will be the next project milestone, he said.

Southard added that utility relocation work is underway on the south side of the project. Storm drain installation will resume upon completion of the relocations.

The opening of the new bridge will be a welcome sight, especially for local residents impacted by the long closure. Since last August, Bradley Road has been closed between Rio Vista Drive and Potomac Drive.

The $17.6 million project will include a 365-foot-long bridge with two lanes each way, bike lanes and a sidewalk. This is designed to improve the flow of traffic on that north-south traffic route, as well as keep the road open during rainstorms when Salt Creek floods.
