The summer before high school is shaping up to be a memorable one for Samaj Daniel.
The 14-year-old Menifee resident will travel to Italy next month, representing Team USA in the 42nd Annual World Boys Baseball Tournament before beginning his freshman year at Paloma Valley High School this fall.
Daniel’s path to Team USA began when U.S. World Baseball of San Diego coach Mark Wilson spotted him during a baseball tournament and invited him to try out. After attending tryouts, Daniel earned a spot on the team.
“I was excited and grateful,” Daniel said.
For Daniel, the trip represents more than just another tournament. Last summer, a visit to Puerto Rico introduced him to coaches from Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and sparked a new interest.
“It was something he explored and discovered when we went to Puerto Rico,” his mother, Jerimese Daniel, said. “He saw the difference in how they play and coach, and he gained an interest in international baseball.”
Daniel said the chance to represent both Menifee and the United States is especially meaningful.
“It means a lot,” he said. “It sets a great example for younger kids, showing that they can make it anywhere.”
Daniel has been playing baseball for about six years, beginning with Menifee Pony Baseball before transitioning to 5 Star National Baseball. He plays catcher, second base and third base. He said he practices nearly every day in addition to team practices, games and training sessions. Daniel’s faith plays a major role in his life and approach to baseball.
“When I started seeing the work ethic there, I knew he was taking it seriously,” Jerimese said. “I don’t have to tell him to practice or work out. He does it on his own.”
Off the field, Daniel has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his time at Menifee Valley Middle School while participating in community service and school athletics.
In his free time, he enjoys watching anime, playing video games with friends and spending time outdoors. Daniel said he is looking forward to attending PVHS, where he plans to play football and baseball.
Before departing for Italy, Daniel will also be recognized locally when he throws out the ceremonial first pitch at Diamond Stadium for the Menifee Union School District Educational Foundation Storm Night on Friday, June 26.
As Daniel prepares for the trip, his family has been raising money to help cover travel expenses and fees through raffles and donations. Jerimese said they are grateful for the support they have received from family, friends, coaches and the broader Menifee community.
“Baseball has been a true blessing for our family. We’ve done some amazing things and traveled to some amazing places,” she said. “We would really like to thank everyone and anyone who has ever had any hand in anything he’s done.”
