MilVet volunteer Leo Montoya named Citizen of the Month

Leo Montoya, a longtime public servant who now dedicates his time to helping veterans and military families, was recognized as Menifee’s Citizen of the Month during Wednesday’s City Council meeting.

Montoya was selected for the October recognition by District 3 Councilman Dan Temple for his volunteer work with MilVet, a local nonprofit that provides resources and support to veterans and their families.

Montoya enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at 18 and served for four years, including a deployment to Vietnam. After leaving the military, he spent 36 years working for the U.S. Postal Service.

For the past two years, Montoya has volunteered as MilVet’s office manager.

Temple said the person who nominated Montoya described him as the “heart of MilVet,” a reflection of the care he shows people seeking assistance.

“When veterans or family members come in in a crisis situation, you sit with them and you provide that shoulder for them and help them navigate whatever crisis they’re in,” Temple said.

Mayor Pro Tem Bob Karwin also praised Montoya for helping veterans and their families navigate financial difficulties and challenges involving benefits and other services.

“You’re such a benefit to our community,” Karwin said. “I just want to thank you for everything you do for us.”

Councilman Ben Diederich echoed those sentiments, noting that being described as the heart of an organization dedicated to serving others was particularly meaningful.

“For you to be the heart of that organization, that says a lot about you and your character,” Diederich said.

Montoya thanked the City Council and community members for the recognition.

“It’s been a privilege to be part of such a wonderful community,” Montoya said.
