On America’s 250th birthday, July 4, 2026, a heartfelt Quilts of Valor presentation took place at Webb Hall in Sun City, where 10 veterans representing five branches of the United States military were honored with beautiful handcrafted quilts.
Each quilt is far more than fabric and thread. It is a lasting expression of gratitude, respect, and appreciation for the sacrifices these men and women made in defense of our nation.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation was established in 2003 after founder Catherine Roberts was inspired by her son’s deployment to Iraq. Since then, more than 740,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded to service members and veterans across the country, each one presented as a tangible symbol of comfort, healing, and a grateful nation’s appreciation.
One of the ceremony’s most meaningful moments was learning the symbolism woven into every Quilt of Valor. Each quilt is composed of three layers, each carrying a special meaning. The quilt top represents the many individuals and communities who come together in gratitude to create it. The batting, or middle layer, symbolizes warmth, comfort, peace, and healing. The backing represents the strength of the veteran, their family, their community, and the nation standing behind them. Every stitch that binds the three layers together represents love, gratitude, and, at times, the tears shed by the hands that lovingly created it.
Special recognition goes to Rose Rhoads and the dedicated Menifee Valley Quilting Angels, who have handcrafted hundreds of Quilts of Valor over the past two decades. Their remarkable volunteer efforts have ensured that local veterans receive not only a beautifully crafted quilt but also the recognition and appreciation they have earned through their service.
The veterans honored during the ceremony were:
Andrew A. – Marine Corps
Tim C. – Navy
Lynn D. – Air Force
Art F. – Air Force
William G. – Army
David G. – Air Force
William H. – Coast Guard
Robert H. – Army
Richard S. – Navy
Frank Z. – Marine Corps
As the United States celebrated 250 years of independence, the ceremony served as a poignant reminder that the freedoms Americans enjoy today were secured through the courage, sacrifice, and commitment of those who answered the call to serve. For the veterans wrapped in their Quilts of Valor, it was a moment of well-deserved recognition that will not soon be forgotten.
