High-fives, bright t-shirts, and thunderous cheers transformed the athletic fields at Menifee Valley Middle School as the Menifee Union School District hosted its fifth annual All-Star Field Day on March 25.

The milestone event brought together students with special needs, dedicated educators, and community volunteers for a high-energy morning of inclusive sports. A dynamic new element of this year’s approach was the full participation of ASB students from across the district’s middle schools, who served as peer mentors, ran activity stations, and fostered a true culture of belonging.

The heart of the day was best captured by the visionary behind the event, who drew inspiration from a well-known leadership principle.

“American businessman Terry Josephson, a prominent voice in personal development, often challenged leaders to shift from a scarcity mindset to one of growth. He said, ‘Stop thinking in terms of limitations and start thinking in terms of possibilities,’ and that quote has truly defined the spirit of All-Star Field Day,” said Cate Dana, SEPAC President.

“Five years ago, this event didn’t exist. I saw a gap, a lack of opportunities for our special needs students to shine. I didn’t want them to sit on the sidelines; I wanted them to be the stars.”

“The All-Star Field Day is a beautiful example of what happens when we come together to ensure every student feels seen and celebrated,” said Dr. Jennifer Root, Superintendent. “We are incredibly grateful to the Menifee Union School District Educational Foundation and our community partners for their $12,000 donation, which included a $3,000 sponsorship from Ares Industrial Management and a $3,000 Community Improvement Designation Grant from District 3 Supervisor Chuck Washington.”

These vital funds provided the resources for an unforgettable experience, which concluded with a celebratory lunch and medals presented to every student. The impact of this community support is felt deeply by the families in attendance.

“All-Star Field Day is an event that my son looks forward to every year! He loves all the activities and the ease of each station,” shared Melissa, a parent from Oak Meadows Elementary. “From a parent’s standpoint, I always appreciate the inclusion. It is the one day where I feel my son can shine his brightest, with no judgment—just love and support from all.”

“Field day is a way for our students to showcase their skills and abilities. Many of my Adapted Physical Education students work hard on their gross motor skills for years, and it is so exciting to see them perform those skills in an event like this,” said DiAnna Cullen, Adapted Physical Education Teacher.

“This year, involving our ASB students to help run the stations provided a truly inclusive environment. A special thank you to our teachers, paraprofessionals, and sponsors for making this day a success, and to our DJ, Jonathan Steele, for donating his time and providing the music.”

The success of the day relied on the tireless collaboration of the Special Education, Nutrition Services, and Maintenance and Operations Departments. The district extends a special note of appreciation to our Special Education Teachers and Paraprofessionals, whose daily commitment ensured every student felt empowered.

From the laughter echoing across the field to the sense of belonging shared by every participant, the 5th Annual All-Star Field Day proved once again that Menifee is a community where everyone wins.
