In a community where parents have many school choices for their children, Temecula Valley Charter School (TVCS) stands out as a place where the “school family is your family”. This phrase is not simply a slogan, but a motto that has been ingrained in the TVCS way of operating.
As the oldest charter school in Riverside County, TVCS officials are thrilled to continue their legacy in innovative, family-centered education on their own campus. For students and parents alike, arriving on the first day of school or orientation, they will be met with an energy that can only come from a close-knit team. This team includes parents volunteering to lend a hand, teachers setting up labs, and students immersed in creative and academic activities.
Building for the Future
Exciting news is on the horizon for Temecula Valley Charter School. They are looking forward to the completion of the new addition to their campus after decades in a rented facility. This project has been in the making for more than 30 years. This expansion will enable TVCS to grow the student body while offering more to students through their whole-child approach.
The Temecula Valley Charter School focuses on providing a personalized education experience emphasizing the sciences in addition to visual and performing arts. With the integration of the new campus, families can expect even more for their students.
The Whole-Child Approach
Temecula Valley Charter School holds the belief that learning is most powerful when it feels alive. This school has embraced the belief by scheduling field trips and real-world experiences that students remember for a lifetime. This past October, Temecula Valley Charter School’s show choir was chosen to perform at Dollywood in Nashville, providing an unforgettable experience for each student involved.
Dr. Charity Plaxton-Hennings, superintendent, said, “We’ve seen how this balance of rigor and enrichment allows students to uncover their passions, grow in confidence, and take real ownership of their learning.
“TVCS continues its legacy of excellence by offering multiple enrichment opportunities in world languages, vocal and instrumental music, sciences and various career exploration experiences. “This is balanced by a focus on academic rigor with a college/career focus apparent throughout the campus.”
Academic Innovation
Students at Temecula Valley Charter School will have the opportunity to learn critical skills in core subjects from highly trained staff using research-backed strategies. The school’s literacy program, ROAR, stands out in providing “explicit, systematic instruction in foundational reading skills”. Students participating in ROAR are shown how to thrive in the classroom and beyond by working on Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. TVCS staff believe literacy is key to lifelong learning and they help each student to “Read On and Rock On!”.
Community Involvement
The type of culture that Temecula Valley Charter School has established is special in that it ripples through their community of students, parents, and staff. Each branch of this remarkable community works together to help students feel comfortable and succeed. In the past year, 480 parents of the 600 students became certified volunteers and are actively involved in helping in classrooms, chaperoning field trips, and working to bring events to life. The presence of these parents truly turns the campus into an extension of home.
Recognition and Legacy
When asked about recent achievements, Plaxton-Hennings notes that she was “honored to have our unique educational program recognized by being named the Top Charter School for 2025 by Education Insider Magazine, Favorite Charter School by Inland Empire Magazine, and achieving several top rankings by Niche”.
Many Temecula Valley Charter School alumni have returned to visit or joined the staff after graduation, serving as a strong reminder of how a nurturing education has the power to shape lives for decades.
A Place to Belong
Temecula Valley Charter School is more than a place to learn. It is a place where students can feel like they belong. With their personalized educational programs, a community that feels like family, and many experiential opportunities, this school inspires students to become the best versions of themselves.
