A Winchester man is in custody following the collision of his vehicle with a pedestrian at the intersection of Menifee Road and Newport Road early Saturday, police said.
Omar Sangines, 32, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and booked into custody at the Cois Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta. He faces a May 13 court date.
According to a Menifee Police Department news release, officers responded to the intersection at 4:58 a.m. regarding the report of an adult male lying in the roadway. The caller reported that the male appeared to have been struck by a vehicle and had visible head injuries.
The male, whose name has not been released, was transported to Inland Valley Medical Center, where he is listed in stable but critical condition.
Officers contacted Sangines, who admitted he struck the male with his Kia sedan. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle and sustained minor injuries. The preliminary investigation indicated that Sangines drove through a green light at a high rate of speed and struck the pedestrian, who was crossing Newport Road in the crosswalk.
Menifee Road and Newport Road approaching the intersection were closed until about 10 a.m., with traffic rerouted to adjacent side streets.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information is encouraged to contact Officer Gonzalez with the Menifee Police Department Traffic Unit at 951-723-1634 or the Traffic Unit at 951-723-1500.
