Spring sports teams work around rain to get seasons started

Recent rains slowed local high school teams’ preparation for spring season openers, but coaches are hoping games this weekend will take place as scheduled.

The Paloma Valley High School baseball team, which posted an 18-11 record last season, was rained out in its scheduled season opener Monday in the first round of the Ken’s Sporting Goods Tournament. The Wildcats’ game against Valley View today was also postponed. Some rain is scheduled again on Thursday, but coach Jason Berni is hoping his team will be able to open the season with the rescheduled tournament game against Calvary Chapel on Friday.

Elsewhere, Liberty’s baseball team will open the season March 4 at Valley View. Santa Rosa Academy opens up Saturday at Xavier Prep.

In softball, Paloma Valley opened its season today with a 10-4 victory over Orange Vista in the Stu Penter Classic. Brooklyn Berni hit a two-run home run and Felicity Arizala singled home two runs. Liberty was also victorious in its season opener, with Cameryn Rutkoff hitting a grand slam to highlight a 14-6 win over Sultana.

Heritage is playing in a tournament this weekend and will play at Corona on Monday. Santa Rosa Academy opens the season at Linfield Christian on Monday.

Local schools will also be in full swing next week in other spring sports, including girls and boys lacrosse, boys volleyball, boys and girls swimming, boys and girls track and field, boys tennis, and boys golf.
