MENIFEE –The Menifee Union School District recently hosted a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony to showcase the completed $15 million transformation of Hans Christensen Academy. While the campus is currently operating as a middle school for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year, this event marks the official countdown to its full reopening this August as a premier Transitional Kindergarten through 8th Grade (TK-8) academy.

The early unveiling gave local families a first look at the “future-ready” design learning pathway that will soon serve students of all ages on one campus.

“This remodel was created around a design learning pathway that will create opportunities beginning with our smallest TK students and transitioning as they move toward high school and into college and/or career,” said Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Root. “It represents our commitment to maximizing our existing resources to provide the best possible environments for our students”.

The project, which began in December 2024, features several major upgrades designed to support students as they grow from early childhood through their middle school years:

— New Early Childhood Wing: Five brand-new, permanent classrooms (1,350 square feet each), built specifically for TK and Kindergarten learners.

— Modernized Learning Spaces: Former science labs have been converted into standard classrooms with updated lighting, flooring, and paint.

— New Play and Sports Areas: The school now features specialized playgrounds for younger children and four full-sized basketball courts.

— Future-Ready Technology: Major tech and lighting upgrades in the library and throughout the campus to support 21st Century research and collaboration.

— Board President Kyle Root highlighted the board’s vision for the site:

“Our vision was to take an existing site and elevate it into a future-ready facility that fosters 21st Century learning. We wanted a space where students don’t just attend school, but where they are challenged to innovate, collaborate, and lead.”

The new academy model allows students to stay on the same campus for 10 years, creating a “continuity of culture” where middle schoolers serve as mentors to younger students.

“Today feels like a brand-new beginning,” said Principal Steve Melvin. “Whether it is a student starting Transitional Kindergarten or an eighth grader preparing for high school internships, they now have a campus that inspires them to explore and imagine every single day.”

The students currently finishing their middle school year are already seeing the benefits. Michael Thompson, ASB President, said, “Being part of this school means being part of a community that believes in us. I’ve gained valuable skills — like collaboration, communication, and critical thinking — that I know I will carry with me for life.”

With the construction complete, MUSD is encouraging families to explore the new HCA for the upcoming school year. The school will officially transition to the full TK-8 model following the summer break.

Families interested in enrolling their children in the new Hans Christensen Academy can find more information and registration details on the Menifee Union School District website.
