Big local week looms ahead for high school playoff teams

Local high school sports fans will be treated to a busy week of playoff games this week in boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, and girls water polo.

Sunbelt League champion Liberty (12-2-2, 7-2-1) will be at home for a 5 p.m. girls soccer game against Sultana High of Hesperia (15-10-2, 5-4-1) on Thursday. This is the school’s first league title in soccer, led by coaches Juan Romero and Nicole Dallin Robbins. Nicole was a standout player at Paloma Valley and is now coaching at Liberty, where her sister is a junior. Taylor Dallin has six goals for the Bison.

In a Division 3 opener also at 5 p.m., Ivy League co-champion Paloma Valley (11-6-5, 6-1-3) will play at Northwood High of Irvine (5-8-2, 3-2-1). In Division 7, Santa Rosa Academy (7-4-6, 6-4-4) will play host to AGBU of Canoga Park (8-4-1, 4-3-1).

Santa Rosa Academy is the only boys soccer team from the area to make the playoffs. The Rangers (10-5-2, 7-5-2) will play at Pioneer (7-7-2, 4-5-1) of Whittier in a Division 7 game Wednesday at 5 p.m.

In girls basketball Division 6, Inland Valley League champion Liberty (18-5, 10-0) will be at home for a 7 p.m. game against Pacific Hills League champion Irvine (14-10, 5-1) on Thursday. That could be considered the second game of a playoff doubleheader for Liberty fans, following the 5 p.m. girls soccer game at home.

In a Division 7 girls basketball game, Paloma Valley (12-11, 4-2) will be at home against Cajon (12-9, 6-4). In Division 2, Heritage (17-11, 6-4) will play at Chaparral (16-12, 6-4).

In boys basketball on Wednesday, Paloma Valley (15-13, 8-2) will be at home for a Division 6 game against Highland (14-14, 9-5) at 6 p.m. In Division 7, Santa Rosa Academy (19-9, 10-4) will play at California Academy of Math & Science (12-11, 9-4).

In a second-round game of the girls water polo playoffs Tuesday at 4:30 p.m, Paloma Valley (20-8, 5-3) will be home against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (14-10, 2-3).
