Both varsity basketball teams at Heritage High School are off to fast starts this season.
The Patriots boys tied the school record for the longest winning streak with their sixth straight victory Friday night, defeating West Valley, 58-50. Heritage, now 6-1 overall, has a chance to break the record Monday at home against Pacific.
Meanwhile, the girls team defeated Gahr 68-31 Friday, improving their record to 5-2. The Patriots will play at Hillcrest on Tuesday.
In the boys game, Diego Mekonsto led Patriot scorers with 20 points. Kendall Sampson had 12 and Quentin Bailey scored 10.
“We’re off to a really great start!” coach Adrian Contretas said. “What really excites me is I feel like we still have a lot of room to grow. The future is looking really bright.”
The Heritage girls team was led in the scoring department by Izabella Duarte with 18, followed by LaKaila Trimble with 14, Nolae Turner with 12 and Bria Lewis with 10.
Trimble made 7 of 8 shots from the floor and Turner made 6 of 9. Trimble grabbed 6 rebounds and Turner had 5.
“We had a tough week facing teams like Rancho Cucamonga, but we can definitely compete,” said coach Deanna Meijer. “Our defense has always been our bread and butter and I’m happy with the improvement with ball movement on the offensive side.”
