Robert Douglas said he is running for the Mt. San Jacinto College Board of Trustees to focus on student success, classroom instruction, affordability and workforce preparation.
Douglas said his interest in serving on the board stems in part from his own experience as a community college student, which he said changed his life and opened the door to higher education, career opportunities and personal growth.
He earned an associate degree in criminal justice before transferring to California State University, Long Beach, and later earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from Chapman University. His career has included work as a college professor, community college safety officer, reserve deputy sheriff, postal worker and small business owner. He also served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Douglas said he now wants to use those experiences to give back through service on the college board.
“I would like to see MSJC continue moving forward with a strong focus on student success and workforce preparation,” he said.
Douglas said the college should expand career and technical education programs that prepare students for good-paying jobs and meet the needs of local employers. He also supports partnerships with businesses, community organizations and public agencies to provide internships and other career opportunities for students.
Affordability is another priority for Douglas. He said MSJC should increase awareness of financial aid, scholarships and grants while looking for ways to reduce the cost of textbooks and other course materials.
Douglas supports academic counseling, tutoring and career guidance to help students complete degrees and certificates and prepare for their next steps.
He also wants the college to continue investing in technology and innovation. Douglas said MSJC should provide modern classrooms and updated technology while preparing students for changes in the workplace, including the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
Campus safety is also among Douglas’ priorities. He said students should have a safe, respectful and welcoming learning environment.
Douglas currently serves as an elected board member and director for the Valley-Wide Recreation and Park District and is a member of the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce. He said he has also volunteered with the CTE Committee at Santa Rosa Academy.
“I believe this combination of education, leadership, public service, and community experience gives me the knowledge and perspective needed to be an effective MSJC trustee,” Douglas said.
Douglas is running for a full term representing Trustee Area 3.
