As the new school year approaches, Menifee Union School District has expanded its Beyond the Classroom program with new sports, more before-school opportunities and a greater focus on academic support.
Beyond the Classroom is the district’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program, which offers free before- and after-school enrichment for all enrolled transitional kindergarten through eighth-grade students. The program is available every school day at all 16 district schools.
“We have several exciting enhancements this year,” Jesse Ramirez, the district’s director of expanded learning, said.
This year, every elementary school will offer basketball, flag football, soccer and volleyball, while middle schools are adding cross-country. The district is expanding before-school programming for middle school students in response to increased demand from families.
Beyond athletics, students can participate in visual and performing arts, STEM, homework support, academic enrichment and wellness activities. Ramirez said offerings are based on student and family surveys, school-level data, program goals and instructors’ talents and interests. The district also partners with community vendors to offer programs such as jiu-jitsu, Ballet Folklórico and gymnastics.
Ramirez said the district is placing a greater emphasis on connecting Beyond the Classroom with what students are learning during the school day.
“We are working closely with classroom teachers to ensure our activities reinforce grade-level skills,” Ramirez said. “By implementing robust data-monitoring tools, we can identify students who need extra help and provide intentional, targeted academic intervention.”
The program is free for all enrolled students, with priority registration given to foster youth and students experiencing housing instability.
“We hope every child discovers new passions, builds strong friendships, and gains life skills that support their success both in and out of the classroom,” Ramirez said. “We truly believe that by exposing students to a wide variety of subjects, sports, and real-world activities, we can help inspire their future paths.”
