The Heritage High defense had a strong outing – including blocking a PAT kick in the fourth quarter – to highlight the Patriots’ 14-13 victory at Canyon Springs Friday night.

Nofotau Sili’s block of a Canyon Springs PAT kick proved to be the difference in the teams’ Inland Valley League opener. A lot more happened in the final minutes as the host Cougars tried to rally, however.

The Patriots were driving before fumbling the ball away at midfield with 2:30 left in the game. The Cougars then converted some fourth downs and were in the red zone when they had to spike the ball to kill the clock. The referees called them for an intentional grounding penalty, however, leaving the home team with a loss of down and the clock running down to 7 seconds.

A rushed attempt to try a field goal resulted in a muffed snap, and the Patriots held on for the victory.

Quarterback Noah Miltthon passed for 206 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Patriots, who are 4-2 this season. Both scoring passes went to Drevion Burnett, who had 6 catches for 121 yards. Sili caught a 23-yard pass and carried the ball 7 times for 42 yards. Sili also led the team with 10 tackles.

Heritage plays at Arlington on Oct. 9.
