A 15-year-old Menifee resident was hospitalized with a suspected severe leg injury after a collision with a vehicle while riding an off-highway e-motorcycle Thursday afternoon, according to the Menifee Police Department.
Officers responded to the intersection of McCall Boulevard and Summit Street around 4:14 p.m. Aug. 6, where they found the teen lying in the roadway and a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu stopped in the southbound lanes of Summit Street.
The teen was treated at the scene before being transported to a local medical center, where he was listed in stable condition. Police said he was wearing a helmet, but it was not Department of Transportation certified.
According to a preliminary investigation, the Malibu was traveling eastbound on McCall Boulevard approaching Summit Street while the teen was riding eastbound on the adjacent sidewalk. As the driver of the Malibu began turning right onto Summit Street, the vehicle and e-moto collided near the intersection.
The 64-year-old Menifee resident driving the Malibu and her two passengers were not injured. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
Police said the teen was riding a Talaria e-moto, an off-highway motorcycle intended for recreational use that is not permitted on public roadways. He was cited for driving without a valid license, and the e-moto was towed and impounded.
The teen’s father was also cited for knowingly allowing his child to operate a motor vehicle without a valid license and was served with an MPD E-Conveyance and Device Advisory Notification.
According to police, the father could face child endangerment charges if the teen is involved in a future crash or is detained while riding an off-highway e-motorcycle on public roadways.
The driver of the Malibu was cited for driving with an expired driver’s license.
Police said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision. The circumstances and factors contributing to the crash remain under investigation.
