For professional soccer player Paul Bond, the ability to adapt has been one of the biggest keys to his success.
From adjusting to different styles of play to experiencing new cultures, the Menifee resident has built his career by pursuing opportunities with clubs overseas.
Bond’s family moved to Menifee in 2008, where he started playing with Valley-wide Recreational before joining the Temecula Valley Soccer Association Hawks. During that time, he was selected for U.S. Youth Soccer’s ID2 National Identification and Development Program representing California. He later played for Paloma Valley High School during his junior and senior years, helping the Wildcats win back-to-back Sunbelt League championships.
“That was a defining moment for me because it reinforced my confidence and showed me that I have the ability to compete with quality players,” Bond said.
After graduating high school in 2019, Bond enrolled at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania but never played collegiate soccer. When the COVID-19 pandemic shifted classes online, he decided to look overseas for opportunities instead.
“I didn’t play collegiately as an American player, which is really unorthodox,” Bond said. “That’s why my path has been different from the majority of players.”
That decision eventually took him to Sweden and Finland before he joined FC Malaga City in Spain. Since then, he has also spent time playing in England and Thailand.
One of Bond’s most memorable experiences came in Thailand, where he competed against members of the youth soccer team rescued from the flooded Tham Luang cave in 2018. Playing for Real Internacional, Bond helped his team win the Copa Tailandesa tournament, where he played a key defensive role in the championship run.
“They were some of the most humble people I’ve ever met,” he said. “Many of them had overcome challenges most people couldn’t imagine, yet they still lived with genuine happiness and optimism. That left a lasting impression on me.”
Bond said playing in different countries has changed the way he approaches both soccer and life.
“Adapt is overall the biggest word there for me,” Bond said. “You really find yourself more.”
Although his career has taken him overseas, Bond said he is proud to represent Menifee and the Inland Empire wherever he goes.
“It’s an honor to say I’m from Menifee and represent the Inland Empire,” Bond said. “I want to show young Inland Empire athletes that with hard work and persistence, you can achieve your dream.”
Bond recently re-signed with his agency and will return to Spain next month as he continues pursuing his goal of playing professionally. His ultimate goal is to represent the United States in the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
