Menifee 24/7 is pleased to honor Athletes of the Month for March at Liberty High School. Honorees were selected by the coaches of their respective sports and were recognized with a presentation of certificates and photo opportunity on campus.
“Gwen Asbury is off to an outstanding start this swim season. She has already broken five team records and continues to set the tone for excellence in our program,” said coach Felicia Asbury.
“Gwen played a key role in leading the Lady Bison to a first-place finish at the West Covina Invitational, where she set three meet records in the 200 IM, 100 Freestyle, and as part of the 200 Freestyle Relay. Her dedication, leadership, and competitive drive make her truly deserving of Athlete of the Month recognition.”
“Christopher Bruner has made a significant impact this season, stepping up as a key contributor to our relay teams,” Felicia Asbury said about the boys swimmer honored this month. “He has already achieved a CIF consideration time in the 500 Freestyle and has played an essential role in all three of our relays, earning CIF consideration times. Chris continues to show impressive growth and is on the verge of qualifying in additional events, including the 200 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly. His hard work, consistency, and team-focused mindset make him a strong selection for Athlete of the Month.”
Softball player Brooklyn Rackstraw “has been holding it down for us game, showing up with consistency, toughness, and leadership when we need it,” said coach Nichole Smith. “Her presence in the circle gives our team confidence, and her ability to compete in high-pressure moments makes a huge impact every time she takes the mound. We’re proud of the way she has stepped up for us this season as she continues to lead and represent our program. Well deserved, Brooklyn!”
“Josef Bae started playing lacrosse four years ago and has become the team’s main faceoff specialist and one of our top goal scorers,” said coach Scott Cunningham. “For never playing the sport, he has worked hard at learning the faceoff position as well as improving his shot and being a team leader. Each year he has progressed and will be a four-year letterman. He has a 75 percent faceoff winning percentage, has 102 ground balls, 16 takeaways, and scored 34 goals and had 6 assists for the month of March. He is one of the team captains and holds a 3.83 GPA.”
Baseball player Alex Arteaga has a .462 batting average, .654 slugging percentage, and “has been a consistent threat at the top of the lineup this year,” said coach Scott Montgomery.
“Jackson Tamm is in his third year as a varsity student/ athlete for the boys golf team and has really excelled both in the classroom and out on the course,” said coach Tavis Hodge. “Academically, he is currently on an A-G track and has a 4.1 cumulative GPA. On the course, Jack has been a three-year starter on varsity and has been one of our top players each season. For the last two seasons, he has had the most consistent lowest scoring average out of all our players. He is going into individual league finals in hope of qualifying for CIF!”
Girls lacrosse player Reese Harvey is a “team first”, selfless athlete who greatly elevates our team and performance,” said coach Brad Loven. “Her attitude and game awareness, combined with her competitive drive, makes her unstoppable! She is always willing to spend time with fellow athletes to help elevate their game to benefit the whole. Off the field, she carries a 4.0 GPA and is a true example of a fierce competitor with abundant academic focus. We know this young woman will continue to excel in all ways!”
“London Baker is a four-year varsity cheerleader and STUNT athlete who consistently demonstrates leadership, dedication, and a positive attitude,” said her coach, Brianne Carson. “As a team captain, London leads by example, supporting her teammates and embracing challenges with confidence and determination.
“Last season, London finished as the team’s stat leader, showcasing her skill and consistency throughout the year. While she has not held that title this season, she continues to put the team first by embracing any role she is given and contributing wherever she is needed most. Her selfless attitude and commitment to the success of the team make her an invaluable member of the program.
”In addition to her leadership on the team, London has taken the next step in her athletic career by signing with and committing to Trivecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she will compete in STUNT at the Division II level. Throughout her four years as a varsity athlete, she has also maintained strong academic performance and has been an excellent student in the classroom.
“London Baker represents everything you hope to see in a student-athlete — hard work, humility, leadership, academic commitment, and dedication to her teammates.”
“Gerard Villamor has been a cornerstone of our program this season, consistently pushing his limits and embracing every challenge that comes his way,” said boys volleyball coach Miguel Barajas. “Whether it’s in practice or under the pressure of competition, he shows up ready to work, improve, and give his best effort every single day.
“He is one of the most reliable athletes on our team, on and off the court. Gerard leads through his actions, demonstrating to his teammates the true value of consistency, discipline, and accountability. His ability to stay steady in high-pressure moments and maintain focus sets him apart and builds trust within our lineup.
“Gerard’s work ethic and commitment don’t go unnoticed. He takes pride in doing the little things right, and that approach elevates not only his own performance but the standard of our entire program. His teammates look to him as an example of what it means to be dependable, resilient, and team-first. As a senior, Gerard has embraced his role fully; setting the tone, leading by example, and leaving a lasting impact on the culture of our program. We are proud to have him represent our team and are excited to see all he will accomplish in the next chapter.”
