Liberty girls swim team wins prestigious invitational title

The boys and girls swim teams had outstanding performances last weekend at the West Covina Bulldog Invitational, with the girls winning the team championship.

The Bison girls also set three meet records and two school records while competing against more than 30 other schools. Gwen Asbury took first place in the 200 IM with a meet and school record time of 2:11.01. Asbury also took first place in the 100 freestyle in a meet record time of 53.24. Those are also automatic qualifying times for the CIF meets later this season.

Grace Asbury took second place in the 100 breaststroke in a school record and automatic CIF qualifying time of 1:10.39. She placed third in the 200 IM with a personal best of 2:18.44 – a CIF consideration time.

Also earning automatic CIF qualifying times were the girls 200 medley relay team in a second-place time of 1:58.02 and the girls 200 freestyle relay in a first-place meet record time of 1:46.89. Team members for both were Kylie Kaas, Tessa Whitford, Grace Asbury, and Gwen Asbury.

Setting personal bests were Kaas in the 100 backstroke (sixth place, 1:11.36) and Emma Coleman in the 100 backstroke (eighth place, 1:15.13).

On the boys’ side, the Bison placed fourth overall. Several individuals and relay teams posted CIF consideration times, including:

— Emmett Mino (100 freestyle, 51.87)

— 400 freestyle relay team of Mino, Cael Hansen, Rylan Holloway, and Tanzel Neubauer (sixth place with a time of 3:36.24)

— Julian Mojica (50 freestyle, 23.74, and 100 breaststroke (1:05.46)

— Gavin Stephens (seventh in the 100 butterfly, 58.47, seventh place in the 100 backstroke, 1:00.52)

— 200 medley relay team of Stephens, Mojica, Chris Bruner, and Chase Mankin (fourth place in 1:47.42)

— 200 freestyle relay team (same team members), second place in 1:35.13

Also, in the Mt. San Antonio College Winterfest Invitational March 13-14, Gwen Asbury broke four school records and Gavin Stephens broke one.
