Heritage wins on last-second shot by Trimble in playoff opener

It took a last-second shot to get it done, but the Heritage High School girls basketball team pulled out a 58-56 victory at Chaparral Thursday in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

The Patriots are now 18-11 heading into the second round, when they will be at home against Saugus on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The game was tied 56-56 with 1.2 seconds left when Heritage inbounded the ball for one last attempt to win in regulation. Bria Lewis passed from the baseline to LaKaila Trimble, who hit the game-winning shot.

Izabella Duarte led scorers with 25 points, followed by Trimble with 22. Lewis had 7 points in addition to the game-winning assist.

“I’m so proud of this team,” said coach Deanna Meijer. “They fought the entire game against a very determined Chaparral team. They never gave up.”

In a Division 7 playoff opener, Paloma Valley lost to Cajon 39-30 at home.
