Heritage High batters pounded out 10 hits and pitcher Wade Johnson struck out seven on Saturday as the Patriots opened their baseball season with a 4-2 victory over Hemet.
Dominic Reyes, Nathyn Ojeda, and Johnson each had two hits. Tommy Nava and Brennon Hendricks each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. The Patriots next play at Bloomington on Tuesday.
Santa Rosa Academy opened its baseball season with a 7-2 win at Xavier Prep in Palm Desert on Saturday.
Maxwell Dupree allowed no runs and only one hit over 4.1 innings to earn the victory in relief. Catcher Nate Bock finished with 3 RBIs.
Paloma Valley lost its season opener 11-2 at Cajon. The Wildcats fell behind 8-2 in the second inning and couldn’t recover. Paloma Valley’s season opener is Monday against Ontario Christian.
The Paloma Valley softball team defeated Yucaipa 2-1 and Corona 4-1 over the weekend before losing to Valley View 7-1 in the championship game, finishing second in the Stu Penter Tournament.
Kaydence Koepsell allowed just one runs on four hits to get the win in the Yucaipa game. Haily Alarcon hit a home run. Against Corona, Kennedi McGee homered and starting pitcher Kadie Urban one run and two hits over five innings.
The Liberty softball team won two games in a tournament on Saturday. In the first game, Lily Matthews singled home a run in the sixth inning to give the Bison a 5-4 victory over Yucaipa. Matthews went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Jolie Tompkins was 3 for 3.
In their second game of the day, the Bison beat Indio, 13-1. Cameryn Rutkoff went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double. Hazel Rosas was the winning pitcher, allowing just one run and four hits in six innings.
