As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more common in classrooms, educators will gather in Menifee on Wednesday to explore how the technology can support teaching and student learning.
The sold-out Grounds for Innovation Conference: Brewing Ideas, Stirring Innovation will be held at Hans Christensen Academy. Hosted by the Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) and Menifee Union School District (MUSD), the one-day conference will feature a keynote presentation and breakout sessions focused on practical ways educators can use AI.
For Dr. Jeff Oldfield, executive director of innovation and competitive advantage at RCOE, the timing reflects what’s already happening in schools.
“AI is already here—students are using it today,” Oldfield said. “The question is no longer if, but how schools will respond.”
Oldfield said the conference is designed to give educators practical experience using AI rather than simply discussing policies. He said the technology can help teachers personalize instruction, create classroom resources and spend less time on administrative tasks.
Teachers are already using AI to create instructional resources and differentiate instruction, while students are using it for tutoring, brainstorming and feedback, Oldfield said. Administrators are using the technology to streamline communication, planning and data analysis.
While AI offers new opportunities, Oldfield said educators also need to address challenges such as ethics, privacy and academic integrity.
“Success depends on teaching students to think with AI—not simply use it,” he said.
Keynote speaker Dr. Heather Collins, a nationally recognized cognitive neuroscientist, will discuss how neuroscience research can support teaching and learning.Â
MUSD Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Root said the conference aligns with the district’s vision for preparing students for the future.
“In the Menifee Union School District, our vision statement is ‘Engaging Young Minds for Limitless Futures.’ Ensuring that our educators are well-prepared to integrate AI technologies into their teaching will guarantee that our students are truly ready for those limitless futures,” Root said.
