Local artists to transform utility boxes across Menifee

Utility boxes around Menifee could soon become colorful displays of local artwork under a new program designed to bring art to city streets.

The Menifee City Council approved a partnership with Arts Council Menifee on June 17 to launch the Menifee ArtBox Program, a public art initiative that will feature work from artists who live, work or attend school in Menifee.

The current theme for submissions is “Our Community, Our Home.” The two-year pilot program will install graffiti-resistant wraps on four to five utility boxes, depending on available funding and the artwork selected. Six city-owned utility box locations have been identified for the project.

Selected artists will receive a $250 stipend sponsored by Arts Council Menifee, which secured a $10,000 grant to fund the pilot program, according to Community Services Director Mariana Mitchell.

Mayor Ricky Estrada said the program will help showcase Menifee’s identity while giving residents another reason to take pride in their community.

“I drive around other cities, and I see murals and art and this is a great opportunity for Menifee to get in on the fun,” he said.

Mayor Pro Tem Bob Karwin also voiced support for the program and credited former Councilman Matt Liesemeyer with bringing the idea to the city’s attention in 2018.

Artists interested in participating can submit applications to Arts Council Menifee through Aug. 1. More information is available at artscouncilmenifee.org or by contacting artscouncilmenifee@gmail.com.
