Menifee Valley Middle School is a California Distinguished School.
Press release from Menifee Union School District:
The Menifee Union School District is proud to announce that Menifee Valley Middle School and Kathryn Newport Middle School have been recognized by the California Department of Education as 2026 California Distinguished Schools.
This prestigious award is the state’s top honor for public schools, recognizing institutions that demonstrate exemplary student outcomes and significant progress in closing the achievement gap. This year, only 408 middle and high schools statewide earned the distinction. Notably, schools do not apply for this award; they are selected by the state based on rigorous performance data, including academic growth, high participation in assessments, and positive school climate metrics.
“Being named a California Distinguished School is a milestone that reflects the hard work our educators pour into our students every day,” said Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Root. “This recognition validates our ‘Limitless Futures’ mission, proving that when we set high expectations and provide the right support, our students can achieve anything.”
Board President J. Kyle Root added, “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are incredibly proud of this achievement. It is a testament to the strength of our community and the efforts that our entire staff provides in supporting our students. Our district is growing rapidly, but awards like this prove we are maintaining a standard of excellence that puts our children first.”
For Menifee Valley Middle School, a long-standing pillar of the community, the award celebrates a tradition of excellence.
“This honor belongs to our staff and our students who show up every day ready to soar,” said Principal Luis Audelo. “At MVMS, we believe in the power of relationships and high-quality instruction. Seeing that hard work recognized at the state level is a proud moment for every Eagle.”
For Kathryn Newport Middle School, one of the district’s newest sites, the award highlights an incredible start to its legacy.
“To be named a Distinguished School so early in our school’s history is a remarkable achievement,” said Principal Jon Mitchem. “Our focus on teacher efficacy and teaching the whole student has created a culture where Mustangs thrive. This award confirms that we are on the right path in preparing our students for their limitless futures.”
The California Distinguished Schools program alternates annually between elementary schools and secondary schools. The 2026 awardees will be officially recognized at a state ceremony in Anaheim in April.
Kathryn Newport Middle School is also an award winner.
