Paloma Valley qualifies 22 wrestlers for CIF individuals

Paloma Valley High School will send 22 qualifiers to the CIF boys and girls wrestling individual championships next weekend.

At the Ivy League finals on Saturday, the boys team qualified 13 wrestlers out of 14 weight classes. They will travel to the CIF individuals at Canyon Springs High School Feb. 13-14. Ten of those wrestlers were finalists and five won league championships.

Champions included Uriel Cruz (126 pounds), Anthony Saldana (132), Brandon Owen (150), Izaac Esparza (175), and Nate Flores (215). Finishing second in their weight classes were William Leyva (106), Brayden Barr (113), Anthony Martinez (120), Travis Ledesma (157), and Lenon Tinauhi (190). Finishing third and also qualifying were Nathan Salmeron (138), Isaac Benavidez (144), and Kahlil Esparza (175).

In the girls league finals, nine wrestlers qualified and two alternates will also be going to the CIF individuals Feb. 13-14 at Marina High.

Champions in their weight classes included Reyna Geronimo (100), Gianna Motolla (125), Jiana Rivera (140), and Lynda Guerra (190). Bryleigh Delis (130) finished second. Melissa Moreno (145) and Aubrey Laviolette (155) finished third. Reece Corson (170) and Alexis Streeter (235) finished fourth. Leanne Torres (120) and Gabriela Jimenez (135) qualified as alternates.

For the boys team, Cruz is now a three-time league champion. Owen is a two-time champ. For the girls, Rivera is a two-time champ. Motolla and Geronimo won championships as freshmen. Moreno and Rivera are four-time CIF qualifiers.
