The Bison shrugged off a slow start to win decisively in Wednesday’s league matchup against Vista Del Lago, 44-18.

Despite missing captain Malaya Baker with a sprained thumb and Kahili Paulino playing while battling the flu, the Bison cruised to their 11th straight victory, the most in school history. That victory also clinched at least a share of the Inland Valley League title, the first ever for Liberty’s girls basketball program.

Coach Fred Yepez commented on his team’s performance after the game.

“We didn’t play a great first half,” he said. “We were playing solid defensively, but were missing a lot of shots in transition and we had numerous unforced turnovers. The second half was much better as we were able to convert a lot of points in transition off of steals and defensive rebounds.”

Liberty held a 15-7 lead going into halftime but exploded in the second half, outscoring the Ravens 29-11 to run away with the game.

Aubrianna Anderson led the scoring with 21 points and 11 rebounds, providing a major spark for the Bison when some of the players struggled to hit shots. Jasmine Dossah was the other Bison in double figures, finishing with 12 points and adding 8 rebounds along with 5 steals. Jayda Reese and Paulino also played great, with stout defense and elite playmaking racking up a combined 6 steals and 11 assists.

The Bison look to continue their hot streak as they prepare for a possible deep postseason run.

“We are currently up by two games in our division with two games left to play,” Yepez said. “JW North is in second place, who we’ve already beaten twice. As of right now, we are co-champions of our league but can win it outright with one win in our last two games. We’ve set ourselves up in a great position for the CIF playoffs and should get a pretty good seed if we win our league outright.”
