Students across Perris Union High School District celebrated Constitution Day on Thursday, Sept. 17, with lessons, simulations, and conversations with officials from local, state, and federal government.
The districtwide celebration followed the PUHSD Board of Trustees’ adoption of a resolution officially recognizing Constitution Day. Visitors included State Senators Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh, Kelly Seyarto, and Sabrina Cervantes; Councilmembers Steve Manos and Ed Delgado; representatives from the offices of Congressman Ken Calvert and Senator Cervantes; the Riverside County Office of Elections; and PUHSD Board Trustee Steve Campos.
At Paloma Valley High School, juniors and seniors heard from Senators Ochoa Bogh and Seyarto, including a question-and-answer session. Perris High School hosted Senator Cervantes in a Government class, a lunchtime event with Councilmember Manos, and an elections presentation for AP Government students. Liberty and Heritage High Schools held lunchtime events open to all students, featuring a representative from Congressman Calvert’s office and Councilmember Delgado.
In classrooms, students designed their own systems of government, studied the Bill of Rights, walked a bill through the legislative process, and analyzed Miranda rights. Heritage students are also preparing for a schoolwide mock election on Oct. 6, while California Military Institute and Pinacate Middle School focused on the Preamble and the Revolution’s role in shaping the Constitution.
The day supports the district’s focus on civic engagement, including student pathways toward the State Seal of Civic Engagement.
PUHSD thanks its Board, Cabinet, principals, teachers, staff, community partners, and visiting officials for making the day possible.
