Kaila Castellanos scored the only goal of the game with about 20 seconds left in regulation play Tuesday to give Heritage High a 1-0 win over host Jurupa Valley in the CIF-SS Division 5 quarterfinals.
Heritage, which is now 17-8-1 overall, will play at Patriot High of Jurupa Valley Saturday in the CIF semifinals. In the last three games, Heritage has won twice on penalty kick shootouts and once in the final minute of regulation.
Coach Michael Mattison described the winning goal:
“The goal was scored from a build-up on the left side. Lexie Jimenez played it to Kaila Castellanos, who one-timed it back to Lexie. Kaila sprinted to the middle as Lexie crossed the ball in. Kaila navigated two defenders and put the ball away.
“The defense of Brisa Quiroz, Yahaira Sevillano, Noemi Diaz, Jazzy Villa, Leah Hareu and Zoey Romero again were outstanding.”
