Paloma Valley High School’s boys basketball team beat Lakeside High School on Tuesday, 58-42.
Paloma’s leading scorer was sophomore Ayden Garcia, who scored 23 points. His ability to make 3-pointers and take chances helped give his team the advantage.
The Wildcats started the game strong, with Erick Fernando and Garcia immediately making shots, which put them ahead 6-0. Lakeside kept the Wildcats' score at 13, preventing them from making any more shots while they caught up. Though Lakeside was only down by two, the Wildcats extended their lead at the last second, ending the quarter with a lead of 15-11.
Paloma again started the quarter off strong, making it 17-11. However, the Wildcats quickly learned to keep their guard up as Lakeside tied it at 20-20 and stayed close behind for the rest of the quarter. The Lancers were only able to score three more points, however, while the Wildcats scored seven. At halftime, the Wildcats led, 27-23.
Garcia continued to help his team stay strong with a six-point lead. The Wildcat defense was focused and managed to only allow only seven points in the third quarter to Lakeside. While ball possession evened out, the Wildcats ended the quarter ahead 40-32, scoring another 13 points.
Lakeside, determined to take the lead, scored the first points of the fourth quarter. But just as the Lancers thought they were close to closing in on the Wildcats’ lead, it was extended by almost 10 points. By the end of the game, the Wildcats held a 16-point lead over the Lancers.
Lakeside’s highest scorer was freshman Justin Jones with 19 points.
