Paloma Valley High School’s boys soccer team secured a win on Tuesday over the Yucaipa High School Thunderbirds by a final score of 4-1.
Yucaipa dominated the first half of the game with significant ball possession in both the neutral and offensive zones, though Paloma put up a good fight. Ultimately, the first two goals of the game were scored by Paloma, with captain Dylan Aguayo scoring one and assisting senior Raul Lara for the second goal. This gave Paloma a 2-0 lead at the halftime mark.
In the second half, the Wildcats took authority and control over the game, shifting gears after Yucaipa scored within the first six minutes. The Wildcats maintained possession in their offensive zone and prevented their defensive zone from becoming overcrowded. They capitalized on turnovers and increased physicality, resulting in two more goals by John Trujillo and Andrian Santoyo.
Assistant coach Nygel Lewis highlighted the team’s offensive strengths and areas for improvement, emphasizing the need to take more chances and shots on goal. He praised Yucaipa as a tough opponent, commending their physicality, technical skills, and speed.
“Yucaipa is always a good team to play,” he said. “They’re very physical, they’re very technical, they’re very fast. They always give us a good game to play.”
Despite the challenges, the Wildcats ended up on top in a competitive game.
