A Perris man was killed Thursday when his motorcycle rear-ended another vehicle on Highway 74 in the Meadowbrook community, authorities said. The incident occurred at about 1:26 p.m., according to a California Highway Patrol news release.
The 28-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, was riding his 2017 Ducati motorcycle westbound at about 100 mph just east of Hammack Avenue in Meadowbrook, an unincorporated area of Riverside County west of Quail Valley and south of Perris. The motorcycle changed from the No. 1 lane to the No. 2 lane while passing through the intersection.
For reasons which are under investigation, the motorcycle failed to slow as it approached a 2002 Saturn LW300, which was also traveling westbound in the No. 2 lane. The motorcycle collided into the rear of the Saturn.
The motorcyclist was ejected from his bike and came to rest in the westbound traffic lanes. Cal Fire responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. The Coroner's Office identified the deceased as Anthony Medina of Perris.
The three occupants of the Saturn – females aged 37 (the driver), 65 and 5 and residents of Homeland – received minor injuries.
The CHP Temecula Area is conducting the investigation. Witnesses are urged to contact the CHP Temecula Area at 951-466-4300. The CHP would like to remind motorcyclists to always obey speed laws and wear an appropriate D.O.T. approved motorcycle helmet properly.
This incident was the second collision in the area in the last week in which a motorcyclist was killed. On Saturday, a 19-year-old San Diego man died when his motorcycle rear-ended another vehicle while traveling about 100 mph on the 215 Freeway just north of Scott Road.
I believe he was wearing a helmet. I saw a black helmet on the side of the road a little ways down (west on 74) from where the accident occurred. I believe it rolled down since the road is slightly sloped in that area.
