A man employed as a custodian by the Menifee Union School District was recently arrested and faces 20 felony counts of sex with minors related to violations in 2010.
The 51-year-old Lake Elsinore resident, identified in court and jail records as Javier Barrera, was employed as a custodian at Evans Ranch Elementary School before his arrest in Moreno Valley on Nov. 14. He is being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, with bail set at $1 million. Barrera is scheduled for a Feb. 18, 2025 court date for a felony settlement conference.
“The district is aware of the arrest, which is unrelated to the school district. The employee is on leave from his position,” said Josue Reyna, Director of Communications for MUSD, in an email response to Menifee 24/7. No other information was released by the district, including how long Barrera has been employed by MUSD and whether he was given a background check before being hired.
All of the charges against Barrera are related to violations in or before 2010, according to court records. Both the Moreno Valley Police Department and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office declined to release information on why Barrera was arrested on those charges after 14 years.
"Javier Barrera was arrested on Nov. 14, 2024, for past sexual offenses, and his city of residence is Lake Elsinore," wrote Sheriff's Public Information Officer Wendy Brito-Gonzalez in an email. "Unfortunately, I am unable to confirm the details of the case."
According to court documents, Barrera’s charges include aggravated sexual assault of a child; lewd acts with a child under 14; and rape of a minor 14 or older. Several of the charges involved multiple victims, documents state.
Barrera was arraigned on Dec. 6 and has entered not guilty pleas to all charges. Court records show he is a former resident of Menifee.
