A Menifee woman and her service dog drowned Saturday in a rafting accident on the Kings River in Fresno County, authorities said.

Mary Marshall, 63, and her German Shepherd were found after being submerged in the river for more than two hours, according to a report on the news website GV Wire. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said her raft was caught in tree branches and flipped over with the victim tethered to her dog in the strong current.

“She was not just our mom, but a former Marine with 20 years of service, a friend, a sister, a daughter, and a fierce protector to everyone who knew her,” wrote her daughter Leah on a GoFundMe page, which can be accessed below:
