A 15-year-old boy from Menifee was taken into custody after allegedly attempting to carjack a sheriff’s patrol vehicle during a street takeover in San Bernardino County.
The incident took place on May 11 at the intersection of Victoria and Highland avenues in San Bernardino, according to a Sherrif’s Department news release. A crowd of about 100 people gathered for a “street takeover.” During the event, participants opened a fire hydrant to facilitate drifting maneuvers.
During the chaos, a deputy’s vehicle was surrounded by a large crowd. Participants began kicking and punching the vehicle. The deputy managed to move away from the crowd, although the vehicle sustained significant damage.
During the investigation, detectives uncovered evidence implicating the Menifee boy as the primary suspect. According to sheriff’s deputies, the teen attempted to overtake the deputy and his patrol unit by opening the driver-side door.
On May 23, the teen was taken into custody at his residence. He was booked into the San Bernardino County Juvenile Hall on charges of felony vandalism and attempted carjacking.
