Amidst the schedule of classes, family and life, 16-year-old Daniella Moroz still finds the time to dive into her musical craft. Moroz is preparing to perform for her second consecutive year at Menifee's Got Talent, where she will take the stage tonight to perform “Wondering” by Olivia Rodrigo at Liberty High School.
Last year, Moroz was introduced to the talent show through the Menifee Arts Showcase, an annual event where local artists showcase their art works while musicians give live performances. The organizer of Menifee’s Got Talent, Colleen Ackerman, encouraged Moroz to try out for the show after watching her performance.
“I really enjoyed being a part of such an amazing show last year and meeting so many great people,” Moroz said.
Moroz’s musical journey started at the age of 10, when her father encouraged her to take singing lessons. It was not until Moroz’s freshman year in high school that she began singing in front of people.
“My most memorable performance was my sophomore year when my school asked me to sing the national anthem for the incoming freshman rally,” Moroz said.
Despite the frenzy of extracurricular activities that define her high school experience, Moroz remains dedicated to her musical craft with weekly routines of vocal exercises and guitar practice. But Moroz's performance is not limited to singing. She writes her own music and now has three songs available on YouTube under the mini album “second best”. Moroz’s songwriting process flows from creativity and personal and human experiences.
“Usually when writing I take inspiration from anything going in my life or anything happening around me,” Moroz said. “If there’s nothing going on with me, I usually write about my friends or any books, TV shows or movies I’ve read or watched recently.”
Yet the path to musical mastery is not without obstacles. Moroz's musical passion has been challenged with self-doubt and worries about what others may think, preventing her from living as her authentic self.
“Now that I have more confidence, I am able to grow healthy friendships and express what I want through my music, which hopefully is what others need to hear as well,” Moroz said.
Looking to the future, Moroz’s aspirations are beyond entertainment. She desires to touch hearts with her music. To aspiring artists, Moroz offers advice inspired from her own journey: Embrace imperfection, trust in the power of your voice and never shy away from who you are.
As Moroz prepares to take the stage tonight, Menifee's Got Talent, her heart races with a mixture of nerves and excitement, just like any of the venues and events she has performed at in the past. Moroz finds comfort in her pre-show routine: A warm cup of tea and the vibrations of her vocal warm-up. Additionally, she carries with her the hopes and dreams to inspire and connect with the audience.
“The main thing is to always try to keep going,” she said. “Sometimes you won’t always like what you have and it’s totally OK to start over and make something different.”
Menifee’s Got Talent starts at 7 p.m. in the theater at Liberty High School. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online here.
