A 16-year-old boy from Menifee was taken into custody on Saturday following a chase by members of the Sheriff’s Station’s Off-Highway Vehicle enforcement team, authorities said.
Deputies attempted to stop the off-highway vehicle, a Polaris RZR, that was riding on a public street at 2:11 p.m., according to a Sheriff’s Department news release. The driver sped away and drove recklessly on a public roadway.
Deputies began a pursuit that traveled through portions of Romoland, Nuevo, and Lakeview and concluded in the hills near Foothill Avenue and Orange Avenue. The driver and his passenger were taken into custody without incident.
The 16-year-old driver was booked into juvenile hall for two counts of felony evading and one count of reckless driving. The passenger was later released to his parents.
The Sheriff’s Department reminds the public that operating an OHV on public street is not only illegal but it can also be dangerous. Please visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/ivm/ or http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/ for legal off-road locations.
