Paloma Valley High School graduate Ashlee Medrano played a key role for the U18 Baja California team that won a basketball gold medal Wednesday in the Conade National Championship Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Medrano was named MVP of Monday’s game, when Team Baja advanced to the semifinals. In the semifinals, she helped lead the team to a 65-45 win over Guanajuato and a place in the championship game.
In the gold medal game, Baja was down by two points with seconds left when Medrano made a perfect bounce pass to set up the tying basket. She then stole the ball on the next possession, setting up the winning basket at the buzzer. The final score was 48-46 over Puebla.
In her senior season at Paloma Valley last winter, Medrano averaged 23.7 points per game. She finished her high school career with more than 1,000 points scored.
