The Heritage High School girls basketball team continued its impressive winning streak Thursday night with a 69-27 victory over La Quinta.
The Patriots are now 6-0 on the season, a record that head coach Deanna Meijer said is not necessarily surprising, considering the work ethic of her team.
“I want people to know that this record and them playing this well is not coming easy,” Meijer said. “They are putting in the work every day and having the hard conversations as a team to work stuff out and I’m very proud of that.”
In the five games before the matchup with La Quinta, Heritage scored an average of 26 more points than their opponents. The largest scoring margin was 63 points in their season opener against Notre Dame.
Junior Sierra Maxwell said this year’s team is pushing itself harder than before because of their improved team chemistry.
“It started out rocky with all of us, but now we’re good and it feels like a family,” Maxwell said. “We push each other in practice and work harder together. I’m just really proud of my team and how far we’ve come.”
According to Meijer, Maxwell — who finished with a team-leading 28 points in Thursday’s game — is one of the best players in the country. But the Patriots roster is full of team players, like junior Reg’inae Hardin, who put up 16 points in the game. For Hardin, it’s about doing whatever necessary to help her team.
“I’m just here for my teammates,” she said. “I’m here for whatever they need me for and to bring positivity.”
Meijer said Hardin has improved so much since last season that after watching game film from then and now she seems like a completely different person.
But that transformation is one Meijer said has taken place all over the roster -- in part, thanks to the huge leads they have had in their games thus far that have allowed for the bench to get more reps in real time.
“I tell them that it’s nice to walk around and have our record to be proud of, but it’s because of their work and growth,” Meijer said. “We push them and have family meetings together, but I want people to know how hard they’re working together.”
For Hardin and Maxwell, the goal of that hard work is to go all the way and add another league championship banner to the gym wall.
The last time Meijer’s team won a league title was in the 2021-22 season. But she thinks this team has an even bigger potential than the one from two years ago.
The next matchup for Heritage will be Tuesday night at Paloma Valley. The cross-town rivals will play at 5:30 p.m.
