The suspect in a domestic violence case was shot and killed Friday night in an officer-involved shooting in the Sun City community in Menifee, police said.
Officers responded at 8:49 p.m. to a location in the 25000 block of Mountain Glen Circle, according to a Menifee Police Department news release. The caller reported that a male, identified as 29-year-old Freddy Robles, was assaulting his girlfriend and was armed with a handgun.
Robles left the scene prior to officers’ arrival but returned shortly after. When the suspect saw officers on site, he drove away at a high speed with officers in pursuit. Within minutes, Robles returned to the residence, exited his vehicle and attempted to force entry into the home.
Officers surrounded Robles and used verbal commands in an attempt to get him to comply, but the suspect continued to force open the front door. Officers then used less-than-lethal options, which were unsuccessful. When Robles turned toward officers and reached for a handgun in his waistband, officers opened fire.
Robles was struck by gunfire and was given medical aid and transferred to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.
The firearm found on Robles was determined to be loaded. The two officers involved in the officer-involved shooting were not injured. Per department policy, the involved officers will be placed on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation.
The incident is being investigated independently by the Riverside County Force Investigations Detail, which includes representatives of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office.
