Menifee resident Gloria Sanchez, an activist for seniors and caregivers in the community, was sworn in for a prestigious appointment this week.
Sanchez has been named to the National Family Caregiver Advisory Council, where she will work with government and non-government workers and family caregivers to provide support and guidance to federal legislators.
In 2021, the Council released its initial report to Congress. According to the Administration for Community Living website, “This report outlines the challenges faced by family caregivers, federal programs currently available to support them, and provides 26 recommendations for better supporting family caregivers. The recommendations will form the foundation of the National Family Caregiving Strategy, which will include action steps to increase recognition and support for family caregivers.”
The Council is based in Washington D.C. but its members participate virtually. Sanchez will also serve on one or more subcommittees as the Council identifies policies and how best to be the voice of caregivers in the United States.
“I’m excited about this opportunity,” Sanchez said. “I’m passionate about this topic and have been involved at the local level. This gives me the chance to work on the federal level.”
Sanchez is chair of the Menifee Senior Advisory Committee and works with the Riverside County Board of Supervisors on scheduling workshops regarding identity theft, senior scams and emergency preparation. She was considering applying for the National Council when she learned she had already been nominated.
