The report of an active shooter at the Temecula Promenade Mall Monday led to a Sheriff’s Department search and investigation that discovered the “weapon” was an airsoft rifle being returned to a gaming store.

Deputies responded at 10:47 a.m. to the report of a male armed with a rifle seen walking into the mall, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release. A search of the property ensued and deputies spoke with witnesses. A male matching the description said he was returning two airsoft rifles to the gaming store, and it was determined no crime occurred.

The Sheriff’s Department issued an update on Twitter stating that there was no active shooter and the mall was safe to enter.
