Liberty High School has named Adam Contreras the new head football coach.
Formerly the defensive coordinator, Contreras has taken on new administrative and logistical responsibilities with the new title while his role on the field remains mostly the same.
Kraig Broach, the former head coach of the team, will stay on staff as the offensive coordinator but said he is excited for the chance to see Contreras take on a role he thinks he has been ready for since the two coaches started together nearly a decade ago.
“If Adam wanted a job as a head coach anywhere in southern California, he would be at the top of any school’s list, so I’m excited to have him here,” Broach said. “He will do the managerial stuff better than I could and it’s just the right time for this.”
Broach said he also looks forward to an increase in time he is able to spend with his family at this point in his life.
Contreras said he is ready to fill this position mainly because of Broach’s tutoring, which started back in the early 2000’s when he played for Broach in high school.
“It’s so cool to come full circle in this way,” Contreras said. “I’ve been able to learn from the best and feel like I’m able to just continue what he started here at Liberty.”
Athletic Director Scott Moore said the transition has been seamless due to the fact that both coaches are staying on the coaching staff and that this change was always anticipated for the future of the football program. It just might have happened sooner than was originally planned.
Moore’s assistance, as well as the leadership from Dr. Erika Tejeda (the principal) is one thing Contreras said has made it very easy for him in this transition.
“They’re the best of the best,” said Contreras. “It starts at the top and they really set a high standard.”
Contreras also said he feels most confident in this new position because of getting to have his mentor by his side throughout the season.
“If I have any questions, Broach is right there with me on the sideline,” said Contreras. “I feel very secure because I can still ask and have him there to guide me just like he always has.”
Contreras will start his inaugural season as head coach on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. with a home game against Valley View.
