The City of Menifee Community Services Department last week honored three outstanding high school students with its Teen Awards. The honorees were introduced during the City Council meeting.
Elsie Sisson, a junior at Paloma Valley High School, was named All-Star Athlete. Elsie plays varsity volleyball, varsity water polo, and participates on the varsity swim team. Elsie participates in multiple swim team events, including the 200 medley relay, where she swims the butterfly stroke, the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay, and the 400 freestyle relay.
Elsie is an exemplary teammate who works hard in practice and cheers on her teammates. She exemplifies leadership skills that inspire her teammates and other students. She treats everyone with respect, and exudes positivity whenever possible. Elsie is a kid that makes sure no other kid is left behind. She includes everyone and makes them feel special.
Elsie balances athletics and academics seamlessly. She maintains a 4.75 grade point average while participating in three sports. She participates in multiple extracurricular activities, including club volleyball, Girl Scouts, and ASL.
Seth Medina, a junior at San Diego Mission Academy, received the Inspiring Academic award. Currently Seth is working on graduating high school with multiple degrees from Mt. San Jacinto College. He is working on completing his Physics, A.S, and a Liberal Arts, A.S with full honors as a member of Phi Theta Kappa - International Collegiate Honor Society.
Not only is he a member of the National Association of Rocketry, but once Seth found out that there were students attending his online charter high school who were homeless and struggling with basic Wi-Fi access, he created a STEM website so that all students would have access to STEM resources 24/7 despite any hardship they might be facing.
Seth has earned a 4.0 GPA at MSJC and SDMA. He is in the 96th percentile statewide for California test scores. He is extremely gifted academically. Seth’s long term goal is to pursue a position working at JPL so he may in partnership with their resources, promoting free access to STEM education. This way all students, including those who are living in hardship, have free access to STEM. He would also like to eventually earn a spot on the team constructing the Mars landing rover, and Mars biosphere environmental systems.
Genesis Morales, a senior at Heritage High School, was named Outstanding Citizen. Genesis is an outstanding student and the face of the Patriot Press News. Genesis is a historian and is passionate about film production. She is one of the executive producers and hosts of the Patriot Press Video News. Additionally, she is the team photographer for the Dance program.
Genesis moved to Menifee early in her high school career. Starting over where she didn't know anyone was scary and difficult. It didn't help that the pandemic prevented her from truly being able to participate in school. Once she returned to campus, she decided to take every opportunity to engage in her community and make the most of what was left of her high school career. Genesis attends almost every event at school and covers it for the Patriot Press News as well as for her senior project, a VLOG of her senior year. Genesis ensures that student achievement is highlighted and celebrated through her work in film.
