The Menifee City Council this week approved a contract for the design of improvements on La Piedra Road between Antelope Road and Menifee Road.
This stretch of road is one of the busiest Menifee streets for pedestrian traffic. Public works director Nick Fidler told Council members that a traffic study showed that five bicycles have been hit by cars recently. A traffic signal was recently installed at La Piedra Road and Menifee Road to help regulate an intersection that is used by many students from Bell Mountain Middle School. Events at Wheatfield Park also draw extra pedestrians to the area.
The design project will be conducted by CivilPros at a cost of $68,941, according to city documents. It will include restriping the roadway to reduce the existing four traffic lanes to two lanes. This will accommodate dedicated parking lanes along both sides of the road as well as bicycle lanes in both directions.
Improvements will also include additional ADA ramps as well as high visibility crosswalks at several points along that stretch of road. These will include truncated domes and a flashing light system. Work is expected to take place this summer.
