Menifee schools were well represented this weekend at the CIF State wrestling championships, where two girls finished in the top three in their respective weight classes.
Paloma Valley High senior Karissa Turnwall (right) placed second Saturday in the 111-pound division. She lost only in the finals to Kiely Tabaldo of Menlo Atherton by a 3-0 decision.
Turnwall advanced to the finals earlier in the day by pinning Kylee Golz of Trabuco Hills. In her varsity career, Turnwall has won two CIF Southern Section individual championships and has been on two CIF-SS team champions in addition to the No. 2 finish in the state.
In the 235-pound division, Liberty High’s Anna Bozanic fought back to defeat Kyree Rubio of Canyon by a 6-0 decision to finish third – an amazing accomplishment for a freshman. Earlier in the tournament, Bozanic pinned the state’s top-ranked wrestler, Gemma Templeman of Rocklin. In the semifinals, Bozanic lost for only the third time all season, by a 7-2 decision to Destiny Marquez of Marina.
