The Paloma Valley High girls soccer team will play at Liberty High on Tuesday in search of its first win of the season.
The Wildcats lost their season opener to Hillcrest 3-1 on Nov. 16. According to assistant coach Carlos Alfaro, the team was missing about 10 varsity players and basically fielded a JV team for that game.
Last week against Murrieta Mesa, the Wildcats lost a tough 1-0 decision.
“We got a couple of girls back and our goalkeepers, but we started four freshmen and three sophomores,” Alfaro said. “We played very well but lost 1-0 and they took away a goal we scored. It hit the cross bar and bounced down, but the ref said it didn’t cross the line completely. But our young girls stepped up in that game.
“(Thursday) night we had a big challenge game against Vista Murrieta. We played very well in the first half and controlled the game, but they managed to get a goal, then we gave up a penalty (shot goal), so we were down 2-0 at halftime. We came back and scored two goals in the second half to tie the game. We have a very young team with a lot of skill and heart, and you can’t teach heart, so that’s half the battle.
“The girls at Paloma had a very disappointing season last year, so we want to build the team to the recognition they had before, and I think with these young players that will be a very good possibility.”
