Bicyclist struck by vehicle in intersection on Newport Road

A juvenile bicyclist suffered serious injuries in a traffic collision that shut down part of Newport Road Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident occurred at 3:53 p.m. at the intersection of Newport Road and Westlink Drive, just east of Antelope Road, according to a Menifee Police Department news release. First responders discovered that a juvenile riding an electronic bicycle was struck by a Chevrolet Traverse. The bicyclist suffered a head injury and was transported to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition and expected to survive.

According to witnesses, the bicyclist was riding eastbound on the north sidewalk of Newport Road when he entered the intersection with Westlink, against the signal and against the normal flow of traffic.

The Chevrolet was traveling southbound on Westlink and preparing for a right turn onto Newport. As the Chevrolet entered the intersection, it struck the rider of the bike, causing him to be ejected.

The westbound lanes of Newport Road between Menifee Lakes Drive and Antelope Road were closed for about 90 minutes during the investigation. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the collision.

The Menifee Police Department would like to remind everyone that wearing a helmet while riding a bicycle can greatly reduce the severity of injuries. Anyone under the age of 18 is required to wear an approved bicycle helmet while riding a bicycle or e-bike.
